Wayne Community College Continuing Education will hold several information sessions this month about its nurse aide program.
Anyone interested in enrolling in a Nurse Aide I or II course in the spring 2015 session must attend an information session about the registration process for the program. The sessions are free and do not require pre-registration.
The sessions are scheduled for 12-12:50 p.m. and 1-2 p.m. on Oct. 13, 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23, 1-2 p.m. and 2-3 p.m. on Oct. 27, and 11-11:50 a.m. and 12-12:50 p.m. on Oct. 29.
All will be held in Room 101 of the Walnut Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro. Attendees must stay for the entire session in order to obtain registration paperwork and be allowed to sign up for a course during the registration period that will be held Nov. 4-25.
Morning and evening Nurse Aide I classes will be taught in both traditional and hybrid (partially online) instruction methods in the spring semester, which runs January through May. Nurse Aide II courses will also be offered. Details can be found at www.waynecc.edu/continuing-ed/allied-health/.

Wayne Community College has been named a “Military Friendly® School” for the fifth year.
The Military Friendly® Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.
Approximately 1,600 colleges, universities and trade schools on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience. The full list can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.
This semester, the college is serving 430 military members, veterans, and dependents in college-credit courses on its campus in Goldsboro and at the Watkins-Das Education Center on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. That number represents around 12 percent of the curriculum student body.
For the sixth consecutive year, Victory Media created the Military Friendly® Schools list from the analysis of responses to approximately 100 survey questions that represent best practices to successfully attract and support military students. The survey is made available free of charge to the more than 8,000 schools approved for Post-9/11 GI Bill funding.
Along with the Military Friendly® Schools list, Victory Media announced the launch of Schools Matchmaker on GIJobs.com. The free Matchmaker tool enables student veterans and prospective military students to review more than 4,000 schools approved for Post-9/11 GI Bill tuition benefits, as well as schools that have earned the elite Military Friendly® Schools designation. With one click, prospective students can view schools that meet their individual search criteria, as well as a short sub-list of qualifying schools designated as Military Friendly®. Schools in the Matchmaker tool have the option to include information just for military students, including student veteran and alumni “success profiles” and live student reviews.

The Wayne Business and Industry Center will offer the free seminar “Social Media Marketing for Small Business” 6-9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Wayne County Public Library on Ash Street in Goldsboro.
This course will provide participants with basic knowledge about a variety of social media tools and how to use them most effectively: free local directories like Yelp, Google Local, and Trip Advisor; location sharing sites like Foursquare; social media such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Google+; and mobile marketing.

The WorkKeys® tests for Career Readiness Certification (CRC) will be offered six times in October in Wayne County.
The Wayne Occupational Readiness Keys for Success (WORKS) program will provide testing sessions at 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Oct. 7 and 28, 12:30-4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1 and 23, and 4:30-9:00 p.m. on Oct 25. All of these sessions will be held in Room 136 in the Walnut Building on Wayne Community College’s main campus in Goldsboro. Pre-registration by calling (919) 739-7004 is required.
Cost to take the set of three skill assessments (applied mathematics, locating information, and reading for information) is $30 but assistance to cover that cost may be available.
The Airman and Family Readiness Center on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base offers free testing to military personnel and their dependents. The next session will be held 1:00-4:30 p.m. on Oct 21 at the Watkins-Das Education Center computer lab. Pre-register by calling (919) 772-1123.
Those wishing to prepare for the CRC may take advantage of the self-directed instruction and skills upgrade training offered in the WORKS Lab, which also is located in Room 136 of the Walnut Building. The lab is open 9 a.m.-noon on Mondays and Thursdays, 1-4 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and 6-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Individuals may earn bronze, silver, gold, or platinum certificates based on their performance on the tests. The CRC is recognized by employers across the state as a proven measurement of job skills.
Wayne County leads the state in the number of CRCs earned, with more than 13,500 CRCs awarded through the WORKS initiative. Nearly 25 percent of the county’s population holds the credential.
WORKS is a collaborative effort of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, Wayne Community College, Wayne County Public Schools, County of Wayne, Wayne County Career Center, City of Goldsboro, and the Eastern Carolina Workforce Development Board. Wayne Community College will hold two information sessions for anyone considering entering the allied health field. The hour-long meetings will be held at noon and 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16 in Room 224 of the Pine Building on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro.
The presentation will cover career opportunities as well as WCC program expectations, financial aid options, and admissions criteria. The practical and associate degree nursing, dental hygiene and assisting, medical assisting, medical laboratory, pharmacy, and phlebotomy programs will be discussed. No advance registration is required.
Individual appointments are available for anyone who cannot attend these sessions.
